virginia that, desperate search for survivors at the mine there. rescue workers are drilling holes into the upper big branch mine to try and ventilate the area where the four missing workers may be trapped right now. it could take up to 12 hours to get that air in. norah o'donnell is in montcoal west virginia this morning. what's the latest on the efforts to try to reach survivors if there are any. >> good morning. the good news is that the drilling has begun. they're going to go down some 1100 feet in order to try to reach four miners still missing. the governor of this state tells meet odds are long that they'll be able to find those miners alive. they were searching for them late last night but they called off the efforts because they were concerned about dangerous methane levels. so as you pointed out, they're going to have to drill a hole down 1100 feet to release some of those gases before rescuers can go back in. listen to how governor mansion described to me what they're concerned about. >> methane levels got so high that it was unanimous they decided no bring them out beca

let me bring in homer, a west virginia native, a former miner. he's written books, including the most recent "red helmet." he's joining me by skype. when you're looking at methane gas, these were changes made after the last big mining accident, have these safe rooms where people could go in, miners could go in, there would be oxygen, communications and water and keep them safe. apparently searchers went in and looked at one of these rooms and it was empty. how reliable is it to provide a safe place when miners are down there working in these sort of dangerous conditions? >> well, it's a great idea when it works. when you have as huge an explosion as this one, there's not an opportunity necessarily to get to one of these safe rooms or barricade yourself up. this was obviously a huge explosion that killed this many miners right off the bat. the four miners that were missing apparently were in the same area. so the energy that's involved with a blast like this possibly caused them not to be able to get anywhere. >> this apparently is a mine that is a nonunion mine. does that in

of virginia, someone who ran as a pragmatist, someone who is leaving behind his hard conservative origin, he just issued a proclamation for confederate history month. he was actually trying to avoid controversy, and it was not written in the inflammatory way george allen did a decade ago, but running through the proclamation, it completely take for granted that all of virginia in 1861 was white. all of virginia was for secession, and all of virginia was fighting for a self-ruled. that is not true. a third of virginia was black. much of virginia was loyal to the union, and they were fighting to on other people. if you have someone for whom that history was more than they had read in the book, we would be having a firestorm with the republican party had immolated its own hopes of building a bigger base. bob macdonald should have had a big carrier in politics. he has done himself a lot of harm, not out of malice, but out of blindness, and that is why someone like michael steele is really necessary, not as a racial thing. if you are the democratic party and everyone in leadership is a school tea

virginia, and i think throughout the country, are taught to escape first. they are taught to try to get out of the mine the way they came in first. they retreat to a chamber or rescue shelter as a last resort. when they have made the determination, if their training has taken, if they have made the determination that they need to go to a shelter, that that's the last place that they would go. a shelter is a sophisticated barricade, in my opinion. >> is there any evidence at this point that these -- to believe anyone is alive down there, any actual evidence of that? >> we don't have any at this point. we just have hope. >> how far is that refuge chamber for the portal. >> do you know? >> one inch equals 500 foot map. i guesstimated a few days ago about 8,000 feet. >> so rescuer will have to go in about two miles. >> they would ride in a certain distance. they won't walk in from the outside. we'll get them in there as quickly as possible for them to get in as far as we can. >> you said there is not significant debris between the way out and the way in there? >> the debris starts where the nin

to 25 after an explosion inside a mine in west virginia. four people are still reportedly trapped inside. the search has been stopped. pamela brown has the latest details. >> the outlook is becoming more grim. one safety official said it did not appear any survivors made it to a rescue chamber. rescue workers found one of two nearby chambers mt. >> if another explosion had occurred and with it would have lost 50 rescuers, it would have been just something unfathomable.
